Friends & Flashback Friday

Another week finally draws to a close.  Paige Long was in this morning helping out with another Flashback Friday.  I love playing those old songs and sharing stories.  We always wind up with more requests, on the phone and through our Face Book page, than we can play, but it's fun trying to squeeze as many in as we can.

Paige trying to find a Keith Green song, or was it PFR?

We'll do another on-air Flashback Friday before too awful long, and we're working on a special Christmas edition too.  And every Friday we feature a Friday Flashback video on this blog (this week's is at the end of this post).

This Week's Scripture References
We begin every Morning Show with a few verses of scripture and a brief time of prayer.  We pray throughout the day on J93.3.  And the staff meets every day for prayer, praying for the requests you send in via email, snail mail, phone calls or on our website.  We have a free, confidential phone number that you can call anytime you need someone to pray with you.  We call it the Prayer Works Hotline.  The number is 877-800-PRAY or 877-800-7729.

In case you missed any of the scripture references we used this week, they're listed below:
  • Psalm 51:10 - 12
  • Romans 12:9 - 16
  • I John 3:23 - 24
  • John 15:9 - 17
  • Titus 3:3 - 6
A Friend Like You Friday Flashback
Earlier this week I asked for people to "friend" me on Face Book.  That led to a blog post on the And Jerry blog about friendship.  So I thought we'd wrap the week up with a Friday Flashback video on the subject.  It's Geoff Moore & The Distance "Friend Like You" from, I think, 1992.  Geoff is good friends with Steven Curtis Chapman.  They've written quite a few songs together.  And Geoff is also a biker (that's extra points in my book!).  Look for Steven towards the end of this video.  Enjoy and have a great weekend.  We'll see you on the radio on Monday morning.

Flashback Sneak Peek

Tomorrow it's another Flashback Friday.  We'll be playing your favorite songs from back in the day--whatever that means for you.  It could be as recently as 2007 or as far back as 1977.

Paige Long will join us in the morning for Flash Back Friday

Paige will be bringing some of her personal music collection, so we should be able to accommodate just about any request.  It seems that Paige's husband Trey used to be the manager of a Christian bookstore and whenever a CD arrived with a "broken" case Trey would "have" to take it home.  That may explain why Trey is no longer working at a Christian bookstore.

Just part of Paige's CD collection
You can get a head start on requesting a song by posting a comment on the J93.3 Face Book page.  Simply click on the J93.3 Face Book button to the right of this post.

And of course we'll also post a Friday Flashback video on this blog tomorrow.  But while we're on the subject, here's a sneak peak Friday Flashback video.  It's DeGarmo & Key doing "666".  This was one of the first Christian videos to air on MTV.  The first version was rejected by MTV because they thought the shot of one of the characters on fire was too violent.  How times have changed.  Enjoy the video and we'll see you in the morning.

A Shameless Plea For Friends

Face Book was the topic of discussion today on the Morning Show.  And I also made a rather shameless plea for people to "friend" me.  Shameless or not, it worked.  I started the day with 160 Face Book friends and, as of this posting, I'm at 237, well over the goal I set of 200.  Thank you to everyone who "friended" me.  Scroll down a little to see the names of my 77 new Face Book friends.

I share a few thoughts on what friendship means on my other blog, And Jerry.  It's my first post on that blog since August 31, sorry it took so long.  I hope you enjoy it and take a minute to comment.  You can subscribe to any of the J93.3 family of blogs by clicking on the "subscribe" buttons to the right of the page.

We also asked how you use Face Book, and got quite a few good comments on, of all places, the J93.3 Face Book page.  You can join that conversation by clicking on the J93.3 Face Book button to the right.  Oh, you can still friend me too.  I have a long way to go to get as many friends as the rest of the J93.3 staff.  Paige has 437, Steve 445, Rob 968 and Jayar is way out in front with 3,741.  Not that anyone's counting.  Just click on the Jerry Williams Face Book button.

George Dillard, pastor at Peachtree City Christian Church, called in with another Face Book request, though George's was far less shameless than mine.  The organization Hero Box supplies individualized care packages to the men and women serving our country overseas.  Hero Box is eligible for a one million dollar grant from Chase Community Giving.  To get that money to help continue their ministry they need people to "like" or vote for them on Chase's Face Book page.  Get all the details at herobox.org.

Kelsey is scheduled to be back in with us tomorrow morning.  And she may be in on Friday when Paige Long will fill out the lineup for another Flashback Friday.

Courageous & A Friday Flashback

Finally, it's Friday.  How is it that some weeks seem longer than other weeks?  They all have seven days.  Last night was our sneak peek preview of the movie "Courageous" and it's getting rave reviews on our Face Book page.  Feel free to jump over and read some of them.  And no worries about discovering any info that will spoil the plot, everyone has been very good about not posting any spoilers.

Every day we begin the Morning Show with a scripture and prayer time.  Prayer is a pretty big deal to all of us here at J93.3.  In case you missed any of them or simply are interested, here are the scripture references we shared this week:
  • Matthew 11:28 - 30
  • Proverbs 2:6 - 8
  • Psalms 119:27 - 32
  • Psalms 119:129 - 130
  • Psalms 31:14 - 16
Next Week On The Morning Show
Tickets & Tunes returns next week.  Every morning you'll have a chance to win a Family 4-Pak of tickets to Fall Family Fun Days at Rock Ranch, just in time to see Jamie Grace in concert there on Saturday, October 22.  If you follow us on Twitter you'll get a heads up on when to call.  You can sign up to follow us from this page--just look to the right and click on the blue "Twitter" button.

We'll also be talking with Mike Donehey from Tenth Avenue North on Monday and Mac Powell from Third Day on Tuesday.  Those two groups, along with Trevor Morgan are on the road with the Make Your Move Tour.  They'll be joined by special guest Steven Curtis Chapman in Atlanta on October 1 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre.

And on Friday Paige Long is scheduled to be in the studio with us for another Flashback Friday.  We'll open up the phone lines and Face Book for you to request your favorites from back in the day, whatever that means for you--could be all the way back into the '80s or as recent as 2010.  We've done these Flashback Fridays a few times since the summer and people seem to really enjoy them, so hopefully we'll be able to get to your favorite blast from the past.

A Friday Flashback
We can't do a Flashback Friday on the air every week (don't ask why, I'm not even sure), but on the Morning Show Blog we will feature a Friday Flashback video every week.  Here's our first.  It's from my Long Island buddy Kathy Troccoli, back in 1991.  She was really excited about it when it first came out.  The song, "Everything Changes" was big cross-over hit for her, and it's still one of my favorite KT tunes.  Hope you enjoy it, and we'll see you Monday morning.

Community Business Partners & Fun With Envelopes

This morning we were joined in the studio by Vicki Harshbarger of Greystone Power.  Greystone is one of our Community Business Partners.  These partners, along with listeners just like you, support the ministry of J93.3 financially.  Greystone and GEMC Federal Credit Union are making our remote broadcasts from Douglas County's September Saturdays possible.  Mark Nofi of GEMC was also scheduled to be with us this morning, but was unable to attend due to a knee injury.

Kelsey, Vicki Harshbarger of Greystone Power, and Jerry Williams.

If you attend September Saturdays this week be sure to stop by our booth and see Paige Long.  Also make it a point to visit the GEMC and Greystone booths and thank them for partnering with you in supporting J93.3.

Kelsey came in this morning to help out.  She's been on the morning show quite a bit lately, but that's not all she does at J93.3.  We talked about one of her responsibilities this morning, mailing out the prizes and requests for the new J93.3 stickers.  Here's video of Kelsey performing that task.

Of course, if you're a Seinfeld fan, this conversation will probably remind you of another envelope licking event...
George's fiance Susan makes a fatal envelope mistake.

Tomorrow on the Morning Show
It's "open mic" day tomorrow.  We'll open the phone lines and Face Book comments to talk about anything that's on your mind.  See you in the morning.

All The News That Fits

Remember when Walter Cronkite was the most trusted man in American news?

The late Walter Cronkite

This morning we asked "Where do you get your news?"  The responses we've received so far (they're still coming in on the J93.3 Face Book page) on the phone and Face Book show that J93.3 Morning Show listeners seem to favor the various outlets of Fox News, whether that's the local Atlanta Fox 5, cable's Fox News, or the Fox News website.  A full third of our responses cited Fox as their primary, and most trusted, source for news.

I was a little surprised by the second and third place sources, Face Book, with 18%, and "I don't watch/listen/read the news" with 14%.  Below are the responses, ranked in order of popularity.  Percentages equal slightly higher than 100% due to rounding.

  1. Fox News, 33%
  2. Face Book, 18%
  3. Don't watch/listen, 14%
  4. Online sources/do my own research, 11%
  5. Other, 7%
  6. CNN, 7%
  7. J93.3, 4%
  8. Talk Radio, 4%
  9. AJC (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) 4%
Cassie had a great comment on Face Book, "Our TV is turned to kiddie stations, so if it's not on Nick JR, I don't know about it."

Kelsey's been dropping in to help out on the J93.3 Morning Show.

Kelsey was in on the show again this morning.  She wanted me to thank you for all the kind comments you've had about her through phone calls and on Face Book.  We'll see you in the morning.

Two Shirts & Common Courtesty

On Monday 9/19 we talked about how common courtesy has become so rare.  Today (Tuesday 9/20) we asked for your opinion on the two "new" styles of J93.3 staff shirts (pictured below--you can still join both discussions on the J93.3 Face Book page).

Jerry models the "new" new staff shirt
And here he is in the "old" new staff shirt.

We're scheduled to have a couple of special guests in studio on Friday to talk about September Saturdays "Family Day" in Douglas County.
